Is putting them down the right answer?

On Thursday, 2 June 2011, a large crowd witnessed a horrific fall and death of Troop Horse Murphy. Murphy tripped and fell during the performance in Hyde Park before vets concluded that his fractured leg meant he would have to be put down. A makeshift ten was erected and the horse was put down while hundreds of people looked on.

It is not the first time an animal has had to be put down because of a broken ankle or an impossible diagnosis. But is it really necessary?

What if one of us fractured a leg in a fall and the doctor decided that if we couldn’t walk, it would be best to have us put down. A member in our family would hold our hand and reassure us that its ok before we get punctured with a needle that puts us to eternal sleep.

No we don’t get that option. We get a solid cast and 3 months of prescribed rest. So why can animals not get that option? Why is it so hard for an animal to survive like we do when we hurt ourselves. Are they not capable of surviving a broken arm or leg? Not even if they have us to care for them and help them?

What I dont get is why It is ok for us humans to make this decision for them. Im pretty sure that if we could understand animals like we supposedly understand each other, they would chose to live over dying. Im pretty sure that someone from another country who doesn’t know or understand english is not put down when they get hurt. The doctors do the same procedure to fix them up and those people survive.

Im sure im not the only person who feels that putting down an animal purely because they have a broken leg or arm or a fractured bone is not right. Let them have a chance just like the rest of us. If they are incapable of continuing the work they were bred for, Why not provide them a home where they can heal and get back to their fighting form.
